Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and his Kilifi counterpart Amason Kingi should resign before pushing for the secession of the Coast region, Jubilee politician Abdulsalaam Kassim has said. Speaking during an interview with The Star, Abdulsalaam said that there is no way the two leaders can continue pushing for the region’s self-rule yet they are holding public offices. He questioned why the governors want to lead their people in breaking away from Kenya when they are reaping the fruits of the same nation.“You cannot say you want to secede when you are still enjoying the trappings of power brought to you by the same country you no longer want to be part of,” said Kassim, as quoted by the local daily. The two county bosses have maintained that they will not drop the campaign despite several groups mounting pressure on them. Western envoys and elders from different communities including the Mijikenda are among the groups that have asked the governors to drop the secession campaign. The duo argues that the region has suffered historical injuries and has been sidelined by the current and previous regimes.
