A Jubilee Senator has warned President Uhuru Kenyatta against wading into the 2022 succession politics debate by choosing the person to be Deputy President William Ruto' running mate.
Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki said Ruto should be allowed to pick his deputy and asked Uhuru to steer away from the exercise.
"The President should stand aside and leave this chance to that person who will come in agreement with Ruto," he said.
Kindiki, who spoke on Sunday during a fundraiser at Gianchuku, said Uhuru as the Jubilee leader risks causing divisions in the party if he tries to influence who the party should pick as the next Deputy President.
"We are all President Kenyatta's sons and daughters and he should, therefore, be careful not to separate us by favouring some at the expense of others," the Senator said.
Kindiki who is also the Senate Deputy Speaker reiterated that Mt Kenya region will rally behind Ruto in the next election and exuded confidence that he would choose his deputy from either Meru, Embu or Tharaka Nithi counties.
"The Deputy President will be our candidate in 2022 and the Mt Kenya East people stand a good chance to field his running mate," he stated.
Kindiki is on record saying that if Ruto would not pick him as his deputy he will go for the top seat in 2022.
Others from Mt Kenya said to be eyeing the plum position include East Africa Affairs CS Peter Munya, Murang'a Governor Mwangi wa Iria, Kiranyaga Governor Ann Waiguru and Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria.
