Farmers in Uasin Gishu County are asking the national government to implement the Maputo declaration which requires that at least 10 percent of the country's budget is allocated to the Agriculture sector.

According to Kenya Farmers Association (KFA) Uasin Gishu branch director Kipkorir Menjo, regular food shortages in the country is due to government's failure to invest in the agriculture sector.

Speaking in Eldoret, Menjo further said if the Maputo declaration is implemented perennial challenges that farmers face would be a thing if the past.

"It is a pity that only 4 percent of the national budget is allocated to the agriculture sector yet we are signatories to the Maputo declaration," noted Mr. Menjo.

"If we embraced the 10 per cent allocation to agriculture, the country would be more food secure and there will be no more of the current issues of high food prices," he added.
