The nine slots for nomination to the East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) are now subject to contention between Jubilee and NASA.

Jubilee party’s wish to have six out of the nine seats reserved for Kenya has set an impending disagreement between the majority party and the opposition. The demand for the larger a portion the ruling party feels is informed by their super-majority in parliament’s both houses.

Speaker Justin Muturi has informed parliament that an EALA legislator had moved to the East Africa Court of Justice pursuing to have a redress against Kenya over what is seen as deliberate crippling of the assembly’s business.

Majority leader Aden Duale has indicated that the slots would not be shared as in the past when Jubilee took five members to EALA leaving the opposition-affiliated parties with four, further noting that Ford Kenya and ANC would not get a chance.

“There are only three parties who will share the nine slots. Jubilee, ODM and Wiper; out of the nine slots, six belong to Jubilee, while NASA will share out the other three among their affiliate parties,” said Duale.

Parliament guidelines require that a party must garner at least five percent of the membership in parliament in order to qualify for consideration to the positions as a party.
