Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho claims there is a plot to sabotage the county's economy.
Joho said the proposed Naivasha dry port, selling of the Waitiki land to squatters living on it and the issuing of “fake” title deeds by the Jubilee administration, all amounted to economic sabotage of Mombasa.
The ODM deputy party leader said the Port of Mombasa has uplifted the Coast region's economy.
“From Changamwe to Mariakani, Mtito Andei, Sultan Hamud and Athi River, the economy has risen due to the movement of goods from Mombasa Port to other areas,” Joho said on Saturday as quoted by The Star.
He added that the port has also created jobs for residents thus uplifting their lives.
“Don’t take us for fools my friend. We are not stupid. Most people in Mombasa earn their livelihoods in one way or the other through the Port of Mombasa. Why are you transferring port services from Mombasa to Naivasha?” asked Joho.
He accused the Jubilee Party candidates in Mombasa of being selfish by supporting the creation of the dry port at the expense of the residents.
“It is unfortunate they also say there is no problem if the services are transferred. How? You are only after your own selfish interests,” Joho said.
He made the remarks when he met with members of the Kamba community at the Mombasa Women Hall.
