Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi has warned that the Jubilee government is planning to use the drought crisis hitting a number of regions in the country to swindle public funds.
Mudavadi questioned the government’s delay to address the crisis, terming it inexcusable on the government’s side to wait until animals had died before they release the money.
According to Mudavadi, the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) had given a warning in June and that there was no reason the government was waiting until the situation plunged into the worst.
“Who will account on how much livestock was bought and slaughtered in these 'meat feast’ business that Jubilee has embarked on? Given the history of pilferage in drought mitigation projects, it is anyone’s guess that there is a project draught scandal in the making,” Mudavadi said on Wednesday.
Even though Devolution and Planning Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri and Agriculture counterpart Willy Bett on Tuesday told Parliament that the country had enough food and that no Kenyan would starve, Mudavadi argued that the government act and not just assure.
“Starving Kenyans and dying livestock under the pestilence of drought don’t eat figures of food reserves; they need immediate rations to survive. The crisis situation is stage-managed to enable pilferage,” he said.
