[Photo|Parliament of Kenya]The Senate Assembly has elected Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki, as the Deputy Speaker of the Senate. Kindiki was declared the duly elected Deputy Speaker by Speaker Kenneth Lusaka after garnering 38 votes against 17 votes of his closest challenger, Senator Ledama Ole Kina (Narok) – during both rounds of the ballot. 12 Senators were absent. The election proceeded to the second round of voting since neither candidate garnered 45 (2/3) votes in the first round of balloting as required by the Standing Orders. Kindiki was fronted by the ruling Jubilee Party, while Ole Kina was fronted by ODM, one of the Opposition's National Super Alliance (Nasa).The Deputy Speaker was escorted to take his Oath of Office by Majority Leader Senator Kipchumba Murkomen (Elgeyo Marakwet) and Majority Whip Senator Susan Kihika (Nakuru).
