A 28-year-old mother who confessed that she strangled her baby before dumping it in a latrine will know her fate on September 4.
Ruth Ngendo, who pleaded guilty to the charge of killing the three-day-old boy in Njoro, told Nakuru resident magistrate Judicaster Nthuku that she made the decision upon realisation that she could not manage to take care of all her children.
“I feared I could not take care of him due to financial constraints,” the mother of five told the court.
Prosecutor Samuel Kamau said Ngendo, a casual labourer, gave birth to the baby on May 19 at around 7pm then strangled it, then wrapped the young one’s body in a polythene bag before dumping it in a nearby pit latrine.
The court heard that the area assistant chief, who had been alerted by a village elder, notified the police, who arrested Ngendo.
The prosecution added that the woman, who appeared unwell at the time of her arrest, was taken to Njoro health centre where a medical examination revealed that she had given birth to a baby. Ngendo confessed to committing the crime but pleaded for pardon.
