Nyamira county police commander Rhoda Kinanu has faulted the Judiciary over what she termed as frustrations in the war against the brewing of local beer.
Speaking at a security meeting convened by the County Commissioner, Josephine Onunga at Borabu sub-county on Thursday, Kinanu blamed the Judiciary for not supporting the police force in fighting the illegal brewing business.
She said that culprits were charged and freed on very low fines and light punishments an act that demoralises the police officers.
“Our officers are dedicated to their work but it gets to a situation where they arrest the brewers of the illicit beer with an exhibit and when the person is presented before our honourable courts, they are set free on very low fines or sometimes let free on light punishments,” she said.
Kinanu also claimed that some prominent people were behind the continued chang’aa business because most of the brewers are being bailed out by the politicians.
He told them to respect the law as it does not favour anybody no matter the position they hold.
“We don’t work for any person but work for all and within the law regardless of the position you hold. We do our work without favouritism and they should stop interfering in our duties,” she added.
She however urged the judiciary to come up with better ways of dealing with the perpetrators of the business in order to bring order and sanity to the community.
“Alcohol is the source of insecurity in our community and I urge the courts to revise their fines because once a brewer is fined a huge amount of money, it will demoralise him or her and other counterparts,” she said.
