President Uhuru Kenyatta has urged the Judiciary to expedite cases touching on ivory to ensure that poaching is effectively curbed.
Speaking at the Nairobi National Park when he led the torching of ivory worth millions of dollars, Kenyatta said that expedition on ivory cases will ensure that legal action is taken against poachers and people engaging in ivory trade.
The President said that his government has taken various measures tame poaching and ivory.
“It is on the part of the judicial systems to ensure that cases touching on poaching and ivory are handled expeditiously to ensure that we protect out wildlife,” said President Kenyatta.
The President who led government officials in the torching exercise said that poaching and ivory trade remains a threat to wildlife.
He said that laws on poaching will be implemented effectively to ensure that ivory trade is curbed.
One hundred and five (105) tones of elephant ivory and 1.35 of Rhino horn worth millions of dollars were torched on Saturday with conservationists lauding the burning.
Puala Kahumbu, a wildlife conservationist said that the touching of the ivory has sent a signal to poacher’s ant ivory traders that their activities are illegal and will not be tolerated.
“We as Kenyans must join hands and work together towards protecting our wildlife,” she said.
Poaching has been cited as cited as a threat to wildlife with conservationists calling for proper laws and mechanisms to tame it.
