A record three million customers logged onto the Jumia platform last week seeking deals during the online retailer’s annual Black Friday shopping bonanza.
Going to the sales volumes and enhanced traction in online shopping, the 30-day event is expected to be the firm’s biggest, with estimations that it could be six times bigger than 2016.
The retailer has also increased product range to 500,000 items up from 30,000 last year. This has given Kenyan consumers wider products to select from compared to offline retailers typically stock between 20,000 and 60,000 products.
Jumia says the highest priced product is an apartment at Kilimani selling at 10 percent off for Sh19.6 million while some brand new cars from Simba Corporation are sold at 30 percent discount. “It’s been an exciting start to the Black Friday Festival with customers reacting positively to the offers our partners have put forward.
We are seeing increasing interest in smaller towns in the country, and expect that Nairobi will start to represent a smaller share of our business in the future,”Jumia Kenya Managing Director Sam Chappatte.
The e-commerce giant partnered with both local and international brands including Mastercard, Infinix, Nice & Lovely, Pampers, Chandaria Industries, Unilever, Ramtons, Samsung, LG, Oppo, Huawei, Simba Corp and Procter and Gamble. Jumia will launch a fusion of entertainment and e-commerce over the course of a Concert featuring East Africa’s top boy-band Sauti Sol on Friday.
The 2017 edition of Jumia Black Friday sales began on November 13 and will run for a month to December 13, with shoppers being treated to sales and festivities with different deals being released every day.
