Cord Members of Parliament blocked the entrance to the National Assembly, Tuesday morning, preventing Speaker Justin Muturi from accessing the House to approve the debating of the Elections (Amendment) Laws 2016.
Led by Mbita MP Millie Mabone, Upiyo Wandayi (Ugunja), Irshad Sumra (Embakasi South), Francis Nyenze (Minority Leader) among others, the lawmakers said they would not allow the Law to be amended.
The National Assembly had convened the special sitting to amend the Constitution (Elections (Amendment) Laws 2016), to allow use of manual voting system if electronic voter gadgets fail in 2017 elections.
According to Cord, Jubilee want to amend the Laws so as to rig the general elections.
"We are not going to allow the session to continue. In fact, the sitting is illegally convened. Parliament was on December recess. We can not allow the Laws to be amended,'' warned Mabone.
Security was heightened in and around parliament, with police patrolling, ready for any incidents that would prevent the session from being held.
Cord had warned that it would use all means possible to ensure the Bill was not amended.
