River Kabazi has somehow been blocked under the bridge and for the last two years, a lake has been developing, dammed by the road.

The expanding lake is a source of worry to residents and motorists plying the route.

A curious combination of factors has fueled these fears. One, nobody knows how long the bridge can hold before it is finally washed away by the water silently accumulating there.

It is not a question of if, it is about when? John, a matatu driver, says he is apprehensive every time he drives over the bridge especially during the rainy season.

He prays, he says, that when the bridge finally yields, there will be no vehicle crossing it.

Secondly, there are no pedestrian paths on both sides of the bridge. Walking across the it is a delicate balancing between avoiding being hit by vehicles and taking a deadly slip into the dark water.

Already, two fatal accidents have happened here. About a year ago, a construction company did some comic repair on the bridge. Instead of unblocking it, they dug out the tarmac and installed culverts about three metres below the tarmac.

The river under normal circumstances is about 30m below. It was a waste of time and resources.

Nothing has stopped the ever rising river which has now submerged the nearby farms.

The area MP, Nelson Gaichuhie, acknowledged the problem through his personal assistant Mr Bidii.

He said though the road falls under the Kenya National Highways Authority, he can guarantee that a contractor has started rehabilitation of the entire highway, which includes the bridge.

The contractor, PETWA Company, is already doing initial surveying work and the project will start soon.

Well, that is good news. However, residents hope that this will happen sooner than later.

Meanwhile, motorists need to be extra careful when crossing the bridge.
