Kiambu Governor William Kabogo on Wednesday asked the Kenya National Highway Authority (KENHA) to surrender Thika Road to enable the county erect modern market stall structures.

Kabogo said the modern structures will be used by retail traders instead of the informal polythene and grass thatched stalls which have been an eyesore on the eight-lane highway.

The Governor said KENHA has been unable to manage the highways environs and thus said that he has already written to them seeking authority for the county government to launch a beautification project and earn revenue through tax remittances.

“I have already written to KENHA to surrender portions of the superhighway so that we can build structures to promote retail traders along the superhighway,” the county boss said in Thika.

Kabogo lamented that the unmanaged superhighway has turned out to be a hub for dirt and garbage.

“It is easier for the county to manage garbage collection from these areas that will be under the county management,” he added.

He also revealed that the county government will plant trees and flowers along the highway in a bid to make Kiambu a green county.

Kabogo assured the business community of the county government’s cooperation and support in attainment of the county’s development agenda.
