Governor William Kabogo has said Kiambu county government is set to introduce tertiary education loans in the coming financial year.
Speaking in Ruiru on Wednesday, the governor said that he wants to ensure the needy and less privileged students are well catered for in a bid to curb school dropouts due to lack of school fees.
This comes after the county education executive Esther Ndirangu, said the county government has increased the bursary fund allocation due to the increased number of needy pupils looking for bursaries in the county offices.
Kabogo added that each student joining university from Kiambu County will have to apply for the same so that they can be fully sponsored by the county government.
The students will be required to pay back the loans after they complete their studies.
He noted that most of the students that have benefited from bursaries this year were university and college students thus there is need to prioritise their demand for help so as to enhance their education.
“These students are the next Kiambu domestic investors and we need their brains in the leadership roles. They have been applying for bursaries in huge numbers and we have to do something about it to ensure the bursary kitty is also available to others,” said Kabogo.
He called on the area MCAs to consider the move when it will be introduced in the county assembly for debate.
