Kiambu Governor William Kabogo has defended President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy for campaigning for Jubilee Party candidates ahead of the August 8th polls.

According to Kabogo, UhuRuto have a right to campaign for Jubilee Party candidates to ensure they win the polls but noted that the final say lies with the electorate.

“Remember every Kenyan, president or otherwise have a voice. They have a right to say who they think should be elected but remember it is the governor, MCA, MP who is being elected to work for wananchi. As such, people should vote for leaders who will work for them. They should not base their choices on which party ticket the candidate is running on,” he said during an interview on KBC TV Wednesday night.

The county boss also dismissed the assertion that the Kenya Association of Independent Candidates (KAIC) is supporting a team that is not recognising them, noting that theirs is the single largest bloc in terms of candidates, standing at 3,000.

He said these candidates have votes that if embraced by the JP, could give them a clear win of 50+1 vote in August.

“Every one of these candidates has family members if you assume will vote for them. If you have a family of an average 100 people (inclusive of extended family members), these means that cumulatively they have 300,000 votes…only true politicians would think twice before ignoring such a huge bloc,” the KAIC chair added.

On claims that the independents are seeking positions should Jubilee be re-elected, Kabogo said the issue is a creation by their rivals who he noted "feel insecure".

He further went on to reiterate the association's support for Uhuru's re-election bid.
