It seems that Kiambu Governor William Kabogo will have an uphill task convincing residents to have Ruiru Stadium renamed after Deputy President William Ruto.
His proposal has sparked fresh arguments with residents saying the stadium can only be named after people who made a major contribution to Ruiru’s development.
Francis Ngugi, the Ruiru Roundabout Motorbike Group chairman said, “I am against it as this is a political move by the governor to endear himself to the Deputy President. Social amenities should only be named after heroes and heroines.”
Wilson Kamau, a resident of Ruiru said, “The governor made a careless utterance against DP Ruto. It’s high time that we as Ruiru residents realised that the era of naming projects after individuals for selfish gain is gone.”
According to Kabogo, the DP had made great efforts in uniting Kenyans and ensuring cohesion among communities hence deserved to be honoured.
“We are constructing a stadium here in Ruiru and we would like to name it after you. We will invite you to come and commission it on completion as it will bear the name William Samoei Ruto Stadium,” Kabogo said during a service at AIPCA Church in the constituency on Sunday.
The stadium is expected to be completed in four months after the Kiambu County allocated Sh30 million in the 2016/2017 budget for its construction.
