Kisumu County government has commenced relocation of Kachok dumpsite to Kajulu despite four residents of Kajulu having moved to court in the second bid to stop the exercise.
The Kisumu City Manager, Doris Ombara said the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) has certified the relocation of the dumpsite.
Ombara said the new dumpsite has already been zoned into four areas with two-thirds of the quarry set to handle inert waste and another third to hold fresh waste from Kachok dumpsite.
She explained that the process would take two and a half months to complete with 100 lorries set aside to transport the solid waste daily.
“The dumpsite relocation exercise will cost Kisumu County Government Sh.99.2 million,” revealed the City Manager.
She added that the County has also invited companies keen to transform the waste into energy from which electricity generated would be sold through the national grid.
