Education Cabinet secretary Prof Jacob Kaimenyi has come under heavy criticism for the failure to rank schools and students in the just released Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) results.
A private school investor in Kisumu Richard Membo said abolishing ranking will kill education system in the country.
Membo said ranking provided healthy competition among schools in the country and that motivation will ran out.
“Schools were able to compete during the rankings and that led to better performance as students and teachers worked with a lot of vigour,” he said.
He appealed to Kaimenyi to rescind the decision and in future allow ranking of schools and students to continue.
Addressing the press in Kisumu at his Hekima School, Membo says that as investors in education they rely on certain benchmarks.
“Ranking should be allowed back, without it education standards in the country will slumber, this new policy is bad for the education sector,” he said.
He said the policy is being implemented without any consultation among the stakeholders in education sector.
Membo said parents are disappointed with the new move.
There was no fanfare among parents and students in Kisumu as witnessed before since it was difficult to know how the students performed.
