Police in Jomvu constituency have arrested five people after they stormed a polling station over rigging allegations.
The suspects, who include former Changamwe MP Ramadhan Kajembe’s wife, his daughter and three others, were arrested after storming Amani Primary School in Jomvu, momentarily disrupting the vote counting exercise.Changamwe DCIO Francis Wanjau said the five are being detained at Changamwe police station, the Nation has reported.The ex-lawmaker’s relatives were accompanied by armed men and threatened to stop the vote counting exercise “unless rigging stopped”.Kajembe, added the daily, was forced to intervene and calm his children.Police also had to intervene after one of the armed men removed a firearm.The Jomvu seat has seen bitter rivalry between the relatives.One of the candidates is Kajembe’s son, Mwidani Kajembe, who is eying the seat as an independent candidate while MP Badi Twalib, Kajembe’s son-in-law is defending his seat on an ODM ticket.It is said that the senior Kajembe is backing Jubilee’s Karisa Nzai.Supporters of Nzai and Twalib had alleged rigging after Kajembe’s daughter, who is said to have had a media tag, was allowed into the polling station during the vote counting exercise.Later, the supporters were thrown out of the premises.The media wasn’t allowed into the polling station during the confrontation.
