Women from Kajiado County on Friday made a solemn declaration to support President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election saying they will no longer be by-standers during the elections .
The “Declaration by Maasai Women” was made at Ngatatoek trading centre, Bisil Division of Kajiado Central, binding all the women of the entire County to vote for President Kenyatta.
They said they will join other women from across Kenya who have publicly declared their support for President Kenyatta’s second term in office.
The women were drawn from all the five constituencies of the county- Central, North, East, South and West constituencies.
They made the declaration when they met with the First Lady Margaret Kenyatta whom they assured that their declaration was final and irrevocable.
The First Lady had returned to Kajiado for the second time within one month on the invitation of the highly respected Mrs Hellen Nkaissery who had mobilized the thousands of women to make their stand known.
“We have all decided that we shall vote for Jubilee right from the President to the MCAs”, said Mrs Nkaissery before the women made their declaration.
Various women speakers at the function said their votes and support for President Kenyatta was in appreciation of his exemplary record in development across the counties and the First Lady’s innovative health programs under the Beyond Zero.
“We have a unique First Lady who loves and works for women with all her heart”, said aspiring Jubilee Women Representative Janet Teyiaa.
When she spoke, the First Lady asked the women to safeguard all their votes and ensure to vote for President Kenyatta to enable the country continues on its path of transformation and giving hope to all Kenyans
“I urge us all to stand committed as women to safeguard our vote, because our vote counts. We have the power to ensure that we move forward as a community and as a nation to a future of hope, opportunity and transformation”, she said.
The First Lady applauded Kajiado women for their bold step to have their voices heard through their votes and their solidarity with the rest of Kenyan women.
She also paid special recognition to all the women leaders from Kajiado for their courageous and decisive steps-against many odds-to become champions in the political terrain to provide a voice for women.“You give hope and inspiration to our girls that leadership in any role is available to us through our collective action and support for one another”, she told the women leaders.
The First Lady said women must be ready to take action and participate in the electoral process because they bear the greatest pain when their hopes are dashed and the dreams of their children taken away.“ As women, we are directly impacted, and we are closest to the pain when our hopes are broken and our children’s dreams are taken away. So today, we are gathered here for action”, said the First Lady.
The First Lady first met with women from Kajiado County early last month during her second Women Empowerment (WE) meeting in Kajiado town. The first WE meeting was in Kitui. She has since addressed 11 other WE meetings in Isiolo, Samburu, Nakuru, Kisii, Nyamira, Kwale, Homabay, Embu and Kiambu where she has covered a total of 42 counties. In all the WE events, thousands of women in attendance have assured President Kenyatta of their full support .
