Principal Secretary, State Department of Livestock Dr Andrew Tuimur said the government is carrying a number of programmes to help farmers improve their livelihoods.

Tuimur said there are six liquid nitrogen gas plants across the country and plans are underway to add two more.

He said dairy farmers will now be able to access the services at closer range and enjoy subsidised costs.

“In the recent past, our farmers have been subjected to travel long distances and pay exorbitant prices for AI. That will now come to pass as the government strives to decentralise these services,” he said.

Speaking on Friday in Kisumu, the PS said farmers have been charged exorbitantly per animal for AI services that was only available at Kabete in Kiambu.

He further announced that milk cooling plants will be distributed to all the 47 counties in the country.

Tuimur said farmers will be able to store milk as they look for better markets and prices for their produce.
