East Africa rugby 15s defending champions Kakamega High School staged a spirited fight to overcome unrelenting Chavakali Boys 12-5 in the boys' final of the Western Region Secondary Schools Term One games which ended Saturday in Mumias.

In Nyanza region, it was Sinyolo Girls who proved to be the true queens of hockey after drubbing arch-rivals Nyamira Girls to retain their regional title.

In other news, giants Maseno failed to fully defend their rugby 15s and hockey titles, losing the gongs to St Mary’s Yala and Kisumu Day respectively.

In Western, giants Friends School Kamusinga were defeated by archrivals Musingu while Tigoi sucumbed to their elegant rivals St Cecilia Misikhu in identical 1-0 loses apiece.

However, Kakamega had to sweat to defend their 15s title as St Peters Mumias offered strong resistance at the semis just before meeting Chavakali who had humiliated Vihiga Boys 10-6 in their other semi-final clash.

“Competition was very stiff because all schools have worked hard to improve their standards. We only won because we never stopped training even after winning the East Africa title. They were better than us physically, but we were tactical and that gave us an edge over them,” said Kakamega coach Amos Wamanga.
