Speaking to journalists when he  accompanied Governor Ngilu to the National Cohesion and Integration commission (NCIC) offices in Nairobi on Monday, Kalonzo  claimed that Ngilu was being targeted politically for her hard stand against charcoal burning.

The Wiper leader said it was unfortunate for some politicians to attack and malign Ngilu’s name.

He said the Kitui government's ban on charcoal and sand harvesting was in the interest of the community and the country at large.

Kalonzo said it was time politicians stopped politicizing important environmental measures being put in place for the country's interest.

‘‘I don’t think Governor Ngilu is capable of inciting anyone, she should be left alone and in fact be supported by the government in ensuring that the ban on charcoal is fully enforced,’’ Kalonzo said.

Kalonzo said the country was staring at serious disaster if charcoal and sand harvesting is entertained across the country.

He  said the issue of environment conservation was bigger than selfish interests of few individual politicians.

The Wiper leader asked Kenyans to take the first step and conserve the environment.

He said charcoal burning should be a thing of the past now, adding that it was time Kenyans embraced alternative forms of energy.

Kalonzo said they will stand with Ngilu, adding that any attempts by the government to intimidate her will not be taken lightly.

Governor Ngilu has been under criticism with allegations that she incited youth to burn vehicles found  ferrying charcoal in the county.

Ngilu has, however, denied inciting youth to violence.

A section of Kiambu politicians led by Governor Ferdinand Waititu have been calling and demanding for Ngilu’s arrest.

Last week, Ngilu was granted a Sh50, 000 anticipatory bail stopping her arrest and prosecution over the alleged incitement.
