Opposition’s second in command Kalonzo Musyoka has attacked National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) chair Francis Ole Kaparo for suggesting a possible internet cut off during the August elections.
Addressing supporters in the populous Kibera slum, NASA deputy presidential candidate said that this will be an attempt to curtail freedom of expression through free media. Kalonzo warned Kaparo against messing with Kenyan democracy by limiting social media use during this electioneering period.
“There is no need to shut down social media. We need to develop a culture of tolerance. At a time like this, do not threaten Kenyans. You cannot play with free media,” Kalonzo said.
Musyoka’s warning comes after Ole Kaparo said that his commission is contemplating to control social media. Speaking on Monday, the NCIC chair stated that the many hate messages being shared by social media users are a recipe for violence after the polls.
Kaparo singled out WhatsApp group administrators and warned them that they will be liable for all hate messages spread through groups under their jurisdiction. However, the opposition has come to their rescue while campaigning in the capital city.
