This week Kalonzo Musyoka announced that he may still back a Raila Odinga's presidency.
The announcement came exactly a week after Wiper Party members fronted Mr Musyoka to be the party's presidential flag bearer in 2022.
It's not clear whether Musyoka's announcement was a party agreement or his own personal decision.
However, recent remarks by his Deputy Farah Maalim that Mr Musyoka will not take oath of office as he had initially announced is causing jitters in the opposition.
According to Mr Maalim, Mr Musyoka was not going to follow Mr Odinga's January 30, path because he was a lawyer who understood the constitution well.
Failure by Mr Musyoka to turn up during the inauguration ceremony steered a debate within the opposition with supporters saying that he had betrayed them.
Political analyst Brian Mutoro says that Mr Musyoka's failure to appear at Uhuru Park can work against or for him considering how Odinga acts until the next elections.
He said that if Odinga's rebel ways work for the citizens then Mr Musyoka will have to rethink about his relationship with the former prime minister.
"If things work against Mr Odinga especially then it means that Mr Musyoka will be considered better of," he said, though cautioning that it will not be easy.
Mr Mutoro noted that the former Vice President was still the top most ukambani leader a position he is yet to lose especially after he agreed to work with Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu.
He said that if Ms Ngilu and Mr Musyoka still work together in 2022, then anyone who needs to win ukambani votes must be in good books with them.
Muturo's remarks were disputed by Prof Nyangwancha Nyamweya who noted that it is time for Musyoka to work hard and prove that he can fit into Mr Odinga's shoes.
He said that if Mr Musyoka can satisfy opposition supporters that he was up to task then convincing Mr Odinga will be easy.
"Mr Odinga is a leader who portrays himself as the solution to what common mwananchi is experiencing and he tends to listen to the people more than he even listens to his heart. If opposition supporters agree that Mr Musyoka is okay, Raila will agree," he said.
"Mr Odinga accepted to work with Musyoka despite the difference that emerged in 2007, he still agreed to work with Mr Mudavadi despite what took place in 2013. That is enough for Mr Musyoka Muslims to learn and understand that he can be at the helm come 2022," he added.
