Opposition coalition NASA Deputy Presidential candidate Kalonzo Musyoka has warned NCIC Chair Francis Ole Kaparo against shutting down the internet ahead of the August polls.
Speaking on Tuesday in Kibera, the Wiper Party leader noted that there was need for the state to promote free media, arguing that freedom of speech is the pinnacle of democracy.
“There is no need to shut down social media. We need to develop a culture of tolerance. At a time like this, do not threaten Kenyans. You cannot play with free media,” he said.
On Monday, Ole Kaparo decried the ever increasing hate messages being shared on Social Media, warning that they could spark violence during the upcoming elections.
He further put on notice WhatsApp group administrators, cautioning that they will be held liable for hate messages shared on platforms under their jurisdiction.
