Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has taken a swipe at some Ukambani leaders who have served for long in positions of power yet have nothing to show in terms of development.
Speaking at Kisasi Deputy County Commissioner's compound in Kitui Rural constituency, Mutua said that Ukambani has gone through decades of marginalisation and lack of people-centred projects due to egoism and retrogressive politics by those who have been in leadership.
Mutua said that Kalonzo's Wiper party has no development to show for the 28 years the former Vice President worked with successive governments of former Presidents Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel Moi and Mwai Kibaki.
"He has nothing to show as an MP, cabinet minister and even as a Vice President. Let him point out what he did to the people of Ukambani or is it only poverty and hopelessness?" he asked as quoted by the standard.
"These leaders still want to be elected yet they only aspire to fill their stomachs while the rest of the people are sleeping hungry. They must be rejected," the governor said.
The governor told off critics of his Maendeleo Chap Chap in Ukambani and vowed to soldier on his development agenda.
Mutua asked people to ignore those leaders who are opposed to his crisscrossing of the region to sell his party's ideology saying they are the biggest enemies of the people.
He urged Ukambani leaders, particularity from the Wiper party to abandon the hardline stance against the Jubilee government, and start working with President Uhuru Kenyatta's administration to fast-track the tarmacking of the crucial infrastructure.
"I will continue lobbying the President to launch the tarmacking of the road before the next year's elections. I am sure the President will listen to our plea to boost the local business community where the road passes," Mutua said.
