Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has called upon residents in Lamu County to oppose the establishment of a Sh200 billion coal power plant in the county. Speaking on Friday at a rally in Kizingitini Island in Lamu East during his tour of the area, Kalonzo urged residents not to accept the setting up of the plant, arguing that it is harmful to their lives. The former vice President argued that the coal power plant is being forced on the residents, a move he termed as unacceptable. The NASA co-principal claimed there were plans to establish a similar plant in Kitui but residents rejected it despite the area having large deposits of coal. Kalonzo lauded Lamu County Women Representative Shakila Abdalla for her relentless fight in opposing the plan.On her part, Abdalla said she will not give up fighting for her people. “I will not relent. I will fight for the people of Lamu on the coal power plant,” she said, as quoted by the Nation. Speaking during the same rally, Wiper Secretary General Hassan Omar said Kalonzo has been tested and proven to be a good leader.“At Wiper, we have already proved that Kalonzo is a good leader. He has elected me as the party secretary-general and Ms Abdalla as his deputy,” Omar said.
