Maalim was unveiled during Wiper’s National Governing Council at the Kasarani gymnasium in Nairobi on Tuesday.

The vocal Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) member decamped from Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) after accepting the party position.

He endorsed Kalonzo as Cord’s presidential flag bearer saying the former VP has what it takes to lead the country.

The former Lagdera MP who is eyeing the Garissa Township parliamentary seat said Kalonzo should fly the opposition’s flag in the 2017 elections to unseat the Jubilee combination of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy, William Ruto.

Maalim seeks to unseat National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale from the Garissa Township position.

Until his defection from ODM, he was the party’s disciplinary committee chair. He oversaw the expulsion of 13 members who defected to other parties among them former Secretary General, Ababu Namwamba.
