Former Lamu county women rep Shakilla Abdalla has urged the national government to compensate persons displaced to pave way for the expansion of the Lamu-Garsen road.

Addressing the press on Thursday, Shakilla, also Wiper Deputy Leader faulted the government for not taking the matter with the seriousness it deserves.

The vocal politician also said that she supports the new project but reminded the government to remember individuals who were affected following the launch of the 135 Kilometer road, which was launched last year by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Her remarks come after the national government revealed that it has allocated Sh.10.4 billion towards the expansion of the project.

“We are glad that projects like the LAPSSET have pushed the government to start constructing the Lamu-Garsen road. Its however surprising that the government hasn’t said a thing about compensating those who had to move away from their lands so that the road could be expanded” she said, as quoted by Baraka FM.

Upon completion, the project is expected to create more business opportunities for the local residents of the area.

Shakilla further said that the government needs to fasten the process in order to curb the increased incidents of insecurity because of the Al-Shabaab militia group.

The residents of the area have been lamenting over the poor state of the road for decades.
