The former National deputy speaker  argues that Raila’s idea for fresh election in August is not realistic.

Maalim, who unsuccessfully, contested for the Garissa Township seat in last year’s general election, wants Raila to seek other ways of pursuing for electoral reforms and forget about fresh election.

He said that the constitution provides for an election after every five years and that the next will be in 2022.

“I don’t see Raila’s idea and call for fresh election in August work because as it is now, the next election  will be in 2022,” the former Lagdera legislator  told journalists at Garissa Town on Sunday.

The former lawmaker said that Raila and the larger NASA coalition will have to interpret the constitution well and use strategies that will guarantee justice.

He said that conducting a fresh presidential election might not be possible since Uhuru Kenyatta is the constitutionally duly elected president.

He said that the election process ended when the Supreme Court upheld President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election in the October 26 repeat poll.

Maalim advised Raila to seek dialogue directly with Uhuru Kenyatta on institutional reforms in readiness for 2022.

On Wednesday, last week, during an interview with the BBC, Raila was quoted saying that NASA will push to have fresh election in August.

The former Prime Minister who recently took oath as the people’s’’ president said that their (NASA) resolve for electoral justice is unstoppable.

Raila also said that NASA will use civil disobedience to force Jubilee to dialogue on electoral justice and reforms agenda.
