Squatters living in the disputed Kamae land in Kiambu County are now appealing to the government to issue them with title deeds to prevent them from being evicted.
This follows a declaration last week by the National Land Commission Chairman Mohammed Swazuri that the 110-acre-piece of land belongs to Kenyatta University.
Swazuri told the squatters last week that they must pave way for the construction of a children's hospital by the university.
However, the squatters told journalists on Monday that they will not agree to the eviction order, saying that they were allocated the land by Mzee Jomo Kenyatta's independence government.
“Kamae is our home and we are going nowhere", said Jeremiah Mugo, one of the squatters.
“He (Swazuri) must leave us alone. Leaders of this school have never treated us the way he is doing. They have brought down my three roomed house,” said Joyce Wangeshi.
They say that Kamae is where they have known as home, and evicting them is condemning them to endless suffering and misery.
