In a bid to rescue Somali girls from the circumcisers’ blade, women in Kamuthe of Nanghi ward, Garissa County have now formed an Anti-FGM group that will advocate against the vice that is rampant in the area.
The tribulations of a woman in this community bring right at birth even if one escapes birth defects due to long hours of labour or other labour related complication she is most unlikely to escape the circumcisers' knife before puberty.
Most of the women here are prone to incontinence medical condition where body muscles are rendered unable to hold urine or stool.
Seeking to end this tribulation, an organisation of women in the region has embarked on a sensitisation program to educate the community on the effects of FGM on the girl child.
Their effects are now proving fruitful as the group has managed to drastically reduce the numbers of those engaging in the vice.
Meanwhile, according to the Kenya Health Demographic Survey Statistics 2014, there has been a notable decline in the FGM prevalence rate from 38 percent in 2008 to 21 percent in 2014.
