Internally Displaced Persons who were seeking refuge at Yamumbi Camp in Eldoret were on Sunday night forced to camp in the cold, after the owner of the piece of land evicted them.
The almost 300 IDPs of the Kamwingi camp, Gwataniro were forced out from the quarter piece of land where they have been calling home for the last eight years awaiting compensation from the government.
They said their efforts to plead with the owner to give them some time to make arrangements to vacate hit a snag, and now their tents have been demolished.
The chairman of the IDPs Edward Kimani said they have nowhere to go, noting that the eviction had worsened the situation, as they are now facing sanitation and hygiene challenges which put them at risk of contracting various ailments.
He urged the government to intervene and help them to get official residence, while warning that there might be an impeding calamity if they will not be helped in time.
The chairman said children and the elderly are the most affected, as they may contract rain-related diseases.
The IDPs are blaming the District Commissioner for their predicaments, as he allegedly failed to forward their names in 2009 during compensation.
The eviction comes barely a few days after the owner of the land allegedly issued them with a notice that they should vacate the plot by early this month.
