Members of the business community in Kangundo Town have been urged to maintain cleanliness in local trading centres by providing litter bins at their premises.

The county executive-in-charge of environment in Machakos County Naomi Mutie said while her office will do all it takes to ensure rural trading centres were clean, members of the business community must also be duty-bound to keep their premises clean.

Mutie made the remarks during a clean-up exercise by the locals on Tuesday morning in the area to get rid of heaps of garbage that have been an eyesore to both residents and visitors.

“Each business person should ensure that every premises has litter bins in order to maintain cleanliness. We also intend to put in place new metal bins all over the town so those walking on the streets can dump in them," she said.

She said the aim of the exercise was to enact the public health control act in order to raise health standards. She added that plans are underway to carry out major clean-ups in all market centres within the county.

The executive said poor sanitation was a main cause of diseases and the county was planning and laying strategies on elimination of communicable diseases to halt and reverse its raising burden in society.
