Traders in Kangundo sub-county of Machakos county have slammed the county government for failing to complete the market shed in the area to benefit them.
The half-done market shed project was flagged off in 2015 and stopped barely eight months after it began.
Led by human rights activists Chris Kyalo the traders decried wastage of taxpayers' money.

Kyalo said that the shed has turned into a den of street children who have made the place undesirable with dirt all over. The place is now full of dirt, murky waters and used condoms.
Kyalo said the Sh4.5 Million project doesn't benefit the traders since it was left half-done with no signs of ever being completed.

"The market shed in Kangundo market is a white elephant the contractor left the site eight months after it was launched, traders are complaining yet the county government is turning a deaf ear to their grievances," said Kyalo.
Kyalo noted that the public toilets in the market are non-functional after the county government locked them.

"There was no one to clean the toilets so they were closed, the county workers who clean the market are doing a shoddy job, they only clean the roads and leave the better part of the market with dirt," said Kyalo.
However, our efforts to talk to Kangundo sub-county administrator Ann Masai bore no fruits since she was not around.

According to her secretary, she had left for a workers meeting in Machakos hosted by the Governor Alfred Mutua.
