Travellers have raised their concerns on how the 14 seater matatus plying the Kangundo-Nairobi highway are usually driven saying that they are driven carelessly and at a high speed.
Speaking to Philomena Kyalo, a business lady at Tala market she said that she uses these matatus to fetch green groceries from Marikiti market in Nairobi and transport them to Tala on a daily basis explaining that they are usually driven at a high speed which leaves many passengers frightened.
"These nissans are driven by reckless people, who drive at a speed higher than 80 km/h," Philomena said.
She added that most of these matatus don't usually have speed governors and whenever passengers complain to the driver or conductor they are met with rude responses and insults.
Speaking to one driver whose name was upheld for security purposes explained that there's pressure from matatu owners to deliver a certain amount of money and also from matatu's saccos hence forcing them to tamper with the speed governors so that they may go for many trips as possible.
"It's not our fault, we are forced by circumstances, you find that there is a certain money the owner of the vehicle wants at the end of the day and also there's an amount of money we have to pay to the saccos so that's why most of us have tampered with the speed governor so that we don't lose our jobs," a driver said.
However, efforts to talk to the chairpersons managing the two main saccos operating within the Kangundo-Nairobi highway to comment on this issue bore no fruits as they were unreachable.
