Residents of Kangundo in Machakos County have called for relief food from the government.

Kangundo West MCA Kaloki Ikusya said both the county and national governments should urgently supply the locals with relief food to end starvation.

Ikusya said over 6,000 families from the Sub County were in dire need of food aid.

He addressed the press in his ward on Sunday.

Ikusya said the governments need to intervene into the matter urgently so as to avert the situation before locals succumb to hunger.

“The government needs to act fast, thousands of Kangundo residents are on the verge of starvation following poor rains that have led to total crops failure", Ikusya Said.

Commenting on the issue, Matetani Sub chief Mary Musa said that children from the area were finding it hard to report to school on empty bellies.

Musa said the situation had led to emergence of petty thieves in her sub location.

“Chicken theft is on the rise lately, residents are complaining day and night," Said Musa.

This comes few days after the Kangundo MP Fabian Muli urged the government to subsidize food prices for his constituents to benefit.

However, some residents criticized Muli's plea to the state.

They said the MP should raise the issue with the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture if he 'genuinely' wanted to help.

Kangundo Sub County experienced insufficient rainfall, a situation that led to poor crops yield.
