Small scale traders in Kanyoni Market have urged the county government to expand its open air market to help accommodate the growing number of hawkers in the area.
The traders stated the market is congested and needs to be expanded since some shops have been built near the market occupying a large portion of their market space.
Kanyoni Small Scale Trader’s Organisation, treasurer, Jennifer Muchiri speaking at a meeting held in the market, claimed that the market was supposed to be an open air market but some businessmen had encroached and put up shops around the designated area.
“We are surrounded by shops all over the market and it’s hard for our customers to notice the market thus we lose many customers to the shops,” said Muchiri.
She also claimed that the county council officers were demanding unnecessary taxes despite the market space being limited.
“Nothing has been done for the small scale traders for the past two years. We are being harassed by the county government officers who ask us to shift every now and then,” said Muchiri.
The treasurer added that the county government should come to ground and listen to the traders’ plea.
