National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) chairman Francis Ole Kaparo has condemned the Tuesday incident where a section of Rift Valley leaders including governors stormed Moi University in protest over the appointment of Prof Laban Ayiro as acting vice-chancellor.
He said that such actions painted a bad picture about public universities where people tended to believe that they (universities) were owned by communities where they are located.
Mr Kaparo further said that of late communities neighbouring education institutions have been claiming unwarranted rights to jobs just by virtue that the institutions were established in their regions, further adding that Kenyans had a right to study, live and work anywhere they wished.
Kaparo’s sentiments came after Uasin Gishu governor Mandago was reported to have led a group of other politicians to ouster newly appointed Moi University acting VC Prof Laban Ayiro on grounds that he was an ‘outsider’.
The leaders vowed that incase Education CS Fred Matiang’i did not rescind the decision and appoint someone from the local community, they would ensure the September 20 graduation does not take place.
