The suspect holding the police station hostage is said to have been arrested awhile back over terrorism allegations.

Sources say that the police did not conduct a proper investigation before detaining the gunman.

The man is said to be an Al-Shabaab member and was held at the Kapenguria police station two days ago after attempting to recruit youths from West Pokot to join the Al-Shabaab militia group.

The suspect, Omar Okwaki Eumod, is said to have planned his escape before he managed to get a rifle from one of the officers and begun shooting in the 3 a.m, Thursday morning incident.

It is alleged that when one police officer opened the cells to take in more suspects, Omar snatched the officer’s gun, shot him dead and turned on the other officers.

Administration Police officers who are on reinforcement cannot access the station, however, they have surrounded the station and are trying to contain the situation.

It has been confirmed by the West Pokot county commissioner, Wilson Wanyanga that the Kapenguria OCS, Vitalis Ochido was killed in the attack alongside four other officers.

“The station has been surrounded and efforts to subdue him are ongoing,” said Inspector General Joseph Boinnet.
