The manholes, which are about 100 in total, were established as a means to control drainage and are about 10m deep.

Residents now claim that people have been falling into the gaping holes during the rainy seasons as they are usually covered by water.

“We have been forced to pull more than seven people from this hole as they ended up falling inside especially while drunk. Many have survived drowning by a whisker, while some have stayed in the holes overnight only to be pulled out in the morning,” said Njambi Kinyanjui

She added that pupils from Nakuru West Primary School have been the main victims, pointing out that they often ended up playing in the holes.

“Many have been playing with the water in them, some as young as seven years old. Many have fallen inside while attempting to wash their faces and since the area is prone to floods, is a very dangerous trend,” she added

Peter Muchemi said the holes, which have been there for close to a year now, have been a huge hazard.

“Since the areas are poor lit, man y people have ended up falling and knocking themselves on the concrete. Two people have broken their hands and legs after finding themselves inside.” He added

Area MCA Daniel Kamau said the manholes were meant for upgrading of the area's   sewer line.

“We are upgrading from pit latrine to modern toilets and they are meant to tap the sewer waste water ,” he added.

Kamau said there was already a contractor on the ground who was dealing with the channeling and the establishment of pipes there.

“I will talk to him and ask him to cover them up but we intend to improve on the drainage system up to Githima area,” he added.
