Residents of Kaptembwa estate in Nakuru on Monday reported having serious fungal infections reported to have been caused by drinking water from River Ndarugo.
The residents said that the water from the river contains chemicals from the nearby factories which are located in Industrial Area.
Julius Korir, one of the affected residents told the press that they have been forced to drink water from the river after the Nakuru Water and Sanitation Service Company allegedly stopped supplying them with water last November.
“I cannot go to work since I have infection on my hands and feet. It’s also very hard for me to walk. We are urging the county government to intervene and solve the water crisis,” he said.
Another resident Tabitha Wanjiru, life has become very expensive for them due to lack of water.
“I have four young children and I cannot let them drink the water from the river. I am forced to buy water and this has proven to be very expensive," Wanjiru said.
Speaking to the Press at his office, Nakuru County health executive Dr Daniel Mungai said that there has been cases of fungal infection reported from Kaptembwa estate noting that the county government was doing everything to ensure they tackle water shortage in the area.
