Residents of Kaptembwa estate in Nakuru-West town are threatening to demonstrate against an influx of toxic alcoholic drinks in the local drinking joints.
Led by the Kaptembwa Residents Welfare Group officials, the residents are demanding for an immediate intervention by local law enforcers and other stakeholders in government, to arrest the situation they describe as a dangerous public health hazard.
While addressing members of the welfare group at Kaptembwa market centre on Monday, the chairperson of the group, Esther Momanyi observed that the influx of toxic alcoholic drinks in local pubs and bars was affecting the health and financial statuses of many middle-aged men and some women in the low class residential areas, and blamed the situation to laxity and corruption among police and public health officials.
Momanyi noted that majority of the alcohol selling and distribution joints in the expansively populated residential area were distributing plastic bottled alcoholic drinks to revelers in the watchful eye of police, who adamantly collect bribes from the dealers.
“We will no longer seat back and watch this happen as a welfare group because our supreme principle is to safeguard the welfare of Kaptembwa estate residents,” she said.
“These illegal alcoholic drinks are causing havoc to our young men who flock the selling joints to waste hard earned money on illicit drinks that are affecting their health. We are saying a big no! And soon, we will carry twigs and placards to express our disappointments against law enforcers and public health officials,” she added.
