Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua has pledged to push for the construction of the Sh20 billion Thiba water dam if elected the governor of Kirinyaga.Speaking at Nice Rice Mills in Ngurubani town, Ms Karua attributed the delay to construct the dam meant to boost rice farming in the area to poor leadership.Ms Karua said she would ensure the project kicks off and called on the residents to pick her for the job.“If elected I shall make sure that this dam which has taken many years to start off is constructed and completed so that rice farmers in the Mwea Irrigation Scheme can benefit,” she said.Accompanied by her running mate, Gachoki Gitari, the former Water minister said rice farmers had been suffering due to lack of competent leaders.“I’m a workaholic and I will help the rice farmers who have been suffering due to lack of sufficient irrigation water to expand their farming,” said Ms Karua. She also promised to reform the health sector and improve roads as Kirinyaga boss, saying hospitals lacked essential drugs and facilities while patients suffer.Roads in the region are impassable and residents suffer when transporting their produce to the market, she said.“Roads are in pathetic conditions and more often farm produce rot in the farms because they can’t be delivered to the market for sale,” said Ms Karua.
