Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua on Thursday surprised many by saying she will support President Uhuru Kenyatta’s 2017 re-election bid.
Karua also confirmed she will seek Kirinyaga gubernatorial seat in 2017 polls, pitting her against Former Devolution Cabinet Secretary Ann Waiguru, who will vie the post on a Jubilee ticket.
The former Gichugu MP has been working closely with the opposition Cord, and at some point hinted at working with Raila Odinga, to remove Jubilee from power.
She has also been a strong critic of the Jubilee administration, condemning the President and his deputy William Ruto, over corruption scandals, electoral reforms and alleged tolerance of extrajudicial killings.
Karua has given her reasons for backing Uhuru’s second term bid.
The former Justice Minister said Uhuru was committed to fight against corruption, and should be elected to complete “his two terms”.
"President Kenyatta is doing his best to fight corruption and I fully support his endeavours. They should elect him to complete his two terms,” Karua said at Kianyaga Catholic Church in Gichugu constituency.
She, however, said she won’t join the Jubilee Party and will seek governorship on a Narc Kenya ticket.
She also dismissed reports that she will form a super alliance with Cord, saying the reports were false.
Karua also took to social media after the surprise announcement. This is what she posted on Twitter:
"Thank you all for your comments! Now allow me to exercise my freedom of association & expression as I always do and always will!"
"Corruption is an individual choice/ responsibility not dependent on political leaning character! It is not partisan or ethnic."
