The residents claim the bridge is in a pathetic condition hence poses a risk to the hundreds of the users crossing River Athi every day.

"We as residents of Kasuitu slum are worried of this foot bridge, it is the only bridge connecting the slum and Athi River town but you can see the kind of state in which it is," said Judith Mwikali.

Ms Mwikali said the bridge had been neglected by the authorities for ages since it was constructed by then area MP, Wavinya Ndeti.

Stephen Kegogo on the other hand said it was risky for the residents to use the bridge he described dangles dangerously during the ongoing heavy rains.

Mr Kegogo said the most at risk were children and women who he noted were vulnerable since the river banks had swollen and bridge filled with water.

George Odhiambo, a local and chairman of the slum's community policing association said the residents were just using the bridge because they do not have an alternative.

Mr Odhiambo said using the bridge was like attempting suicide.

The residents who spoke to this writer at the bridge on Monday said they were tired of the region's leadership that had failed to re-construct the bridge in spite of several requests made by them.
