Residents of Kasuitu slum in Mavoko Sub-County have questioned the Machakos County government's El Nino preparedness.
Addressing journalists at the slum on Wednesday, the residents expressed their fears that the rains might adversely affect them given that the slum is a flood prone area.
"We as the elderly from Kasuitu slum are wondering where the Sh300 million set aside by Machakos County government has gone to," said Jessica Mwende, an elder in the area.
Mwende said they had not seen any El Nino mitigation project being initiated by the government in the slum or in the neighbouring areas since the rains started.
She said Kasuitu residents are a worried lot because there is a huge possibility of their houses being swept away by floods if Athi River happens to burst its banks.
Stella Kanini, a resident, said they had already been affected by the rains as their farms had been swept away by floods.
Kanini said they are protecting their houses from being swept away using gabions built by their grand children around the settlement.
Stephen Ondieki, also a resident, said the county government should visit the slum to asses the situation as soon as possible before disaster strikes.
He said the government should not be reluctant in mitigating the current situation and called for immediate action to be taken.
