Yatta’s Katangi Ward Representative Felix Ngui has challenged youths in the area to apply for government funds and initiate business ventures.
Speaking when he met youth leaders at Katangi shopping center on Wednesday, the MCA told young people to take advantage of the government funds.
He said the government has put in place Uwezo Fund and other programmes to empower youths financially.
The Ward Representative noted that unemployment is a big challenge, but said that it can be curbed if youths take advantage of the funds.
“We will effectively curb unemployment if our young people take advantage of the government funds,” he said.
The MCA also urged area youths to work with the government through tendering. He said that 30 per cent of government tenders have been set aside for youths and persons living with disability.
Ngui however blamed the government for failing to carry out intensive sensitization on the programmes being formulated to empower youths.
He observed many youths, especially in remote areas, have little knowledge on the existence of initiatives like Uwezo fund.
Meanwhile, the MCA wants the sub county to investigate claims that youths are being harassed by police officers.
Ngui said that the allegations are serious, and that he has written to the sub county to have the matter investigated.
He asked law enforcers in the ward to exercise and adhere to the law when hunting and dealing with criminals and spare innocent youths.
